John Baloyi |
John
Baloyi was born in 1964 and died in 2006. His career as a carver started in
1973. Baloyi got his inspiration and support from his grandfather, who crafted
traditional chairs and coffins. Although Baloyi had to leave school at the end
of Grade 11, he continued to be a carver, while earning an income working as a
miner. Baloyi was also skilled as a pot-maker, weaver and
puppetmaker.
Baloyi
explored various themes throughout his works, including Biblical themes, as
well as the depiction of foreign animal species. Through depicting various
species, Balyoi believed that he was adding to the education and development of
children living in rural areas.
